At my job interview, the ARC regional director mused that if I could fare well as a production manager of a circus, then I should be able to manage a medical supply project in Bosnia.

PROJECT MANAGER, USAID/OFDA MEDICAL SUPPLY PROJECT, CENTRAL BOSNIA, March 1996–August 1997

Project Description

  • Program covered two entire cantons (Middle Bosnia and Zenica-Doboj) as well as towns in an additional four cantons, with total coverage of over one-third of BH territory and residents
  • Direct beneficiaries numbered over one million person-treatments
  • Total project budget: $1.3 million

 Responsibilities as Project Manager

  • Made administrative, logistics and financial decisions related to project
  • Scheduled and supervised project activities: Needs assessments; procurement, delivery and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies and equipment; monitoring of delivery sites
  • Supervised project staff
  • Coordinated activities within ARC and with partner organizations and Bosnian health institutions
  • Fulfilled documentation and reporting obligations

Zenica Field Office Activities

  • Field office staff of between eight and twelve persons
  • Field office monthly expenditures averaged $20,000
  • Two major projects in reconstruction and health sectors with a combined budget of $2 million
  • Numerous small projects (under six months, under $15,000 each)
  • Projects covered six cantons, about a third of BH territory

Responsibilities as Head of Office

  • General internal and inter-office coordination and management
  • Made administrative, logistics and security decisions related to field office
  • Financial management of field office and granted projects
  • Acted as liaison with local and international authorities, ensured legal compliance
  • Reporting, special projects
  • Project development and fundraising
